Deveka McKinney

Corporal McKinney’s commitment to service began early, shaped by four years in the Army Junior ROTC program during high school, where she developed a strong sense of patriotism and leadership. Just four days after graduating high school on June 10, 1997, in Fort Myers, Florida, she answered the call to serve by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.

After completing recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina, Corporal McKinney continued her preparation with Marine Combat Training and specialized schooling in Financial Management and Personnel Administration at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. She was subsequently stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, where she served throughout her active-duty enlistment.

Her first assignment was with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39, where she was entrusted with maintaining the official service records of more than 3,000 Marines—an essential role supporting operational readiness and accountability. During her final two years of service, she was assigned to the Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity, where she oversaw the records of 700 Marines and additionally served as the unit’s fitness instructor, promoting physical readiness and personal excellence among her peers.

Corporal McKinney honorably completed one enlistment and was discharged on June 9, 2001. In recognition of her professionalism, dedication, and exemplary service, she earned two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals as well as the Good Conduct Medal. Her service reflects the Marine Corps’ core values of honor, courage, and commitment, and stands as a lasting testament to her dedication to country and community.
